Northern Territory

The Northern Territory Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework 2018-2023 describes the strategy to reduce the Territory’s suicide rate by half over the next 10 years. It is supported by The Northern Territory Suicide Prevention Strategic Framework Implementation Plan 2023-2028 Keeping Everyone Safe.

Vision

A Territory where everyone is empowered to live a life filled with purpose, hope and meaning, and where fewer lives are lost through suicide.

Priorities

The framework describes three priority focus areas:

  • Building stronger communities that have increased capacity to respond to and prevent suicidal behaviour through raising awareness and reducing stigma.
  • Informed, inclusive services that provide timely, integrated, compassionate and culturally safe responses that meet the diverse needs of people across the Territory.
  • Focused and evidence-informed support for at risk groups of people.

These priorities are each linked to strategic directions, intended outcomes and relevant focus elements.

Enablers

The implementation plan sets out the key enablers for actioning the strategic framework:

  • Workforce
  • Data
  • Lived experience
  • Local leadership and self-determination
  • Partnerships and collaboration
  • Community engagement and empowerment
  • Aboriginal-centred approaches.
