World Suicide Prevention Day 2024

Posted 20th August 2024

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) will be recognised 10 September 2024.

WSPD was formed through a collaborative effort between the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in the hope to share the message that suicides are preventable through evidence-based action.

The day encourages people working within the mental health and suicide prevention sector, government, services, those with lived and living experience, and community to come together in partnership to combine efforts to prevent suicide deaths globally.

For 2024-2026, the World Suicide Prevention Day theme is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’, with the call to action being ‘Start the Conversation’.

IASP recognises that while it is important to discuss suicide prevention all year round, WSPD provides an opportunity to highlight prevention effort globally, and acknowledge our combined efforts to create a world free of suicide.

For Australia, hosting or joining a WSPD event demonstrates support and collective effort, encouraging people to seek help and provide help to others.
