New LGBTQA+ state and territory briefing papers

Posted 9th December 2024

The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) has released a series of state- and territory-based briefing papers on LGBTQA+ mental health and suicidality.

The term LGBTQA+ refers to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and/or asexual. The '+' acknowledges others who are attracted to the same or multiple genders or are gender diverse but use different labels.

The papers draw on data from three surveys of LGBTQA+ health and wellbeing:

The eight reports analyse state- and territory-level data LGBTQA+ peoples’ experiences of suicidality, mental ill-health, access to healthcare services, risk factors, and protective factors. They also make comparisons with general population data from other data sources, such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Each paper also examines LGBTQA+ policies and programs at both the state or territory level, and within Primary Health Networks, highlighting current strengths and areas for improvement.

The briefing papers for each state and territory are linked below:

The secondary analysis and publication of the briefing papers were funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care, through a partnership between ARCSHS and LGBTIQ+ Health Australia.
