Life in Mind welcomes the news, which was released today that Christine Morgan, CEO of the National Mental Health Commission will be taking on the role of National Suicide Prevention Adviser to the Prime Minister’s Department.
The newly created role was first discussed during the 2019/2020 Federal Budget, which highlighted it would assist and support the Prime Minister’s Department to co-ordinate national activities across the whole-of-government and inform the design of essential services in suicide prevention.
Everymind Suicide Prevention Program Manager, Marc Bryant said the appointment is a welcome one and presents an opportunity for further strategic action around suicide prevention in Australia.
“The creation of this role and the appointment of Ms Morgan turns an important spotlight on the role of suicide prevention activity nationally, Mr Bryant said.
“I am pleased our government has demonstrated a dedication to investing into suicide prevention and we look forward to further collaboration around this important area.”
The new position will report directly to the Prime Minister and will support the co-ordination of suicide prevention activities and inform the design and identification of essential services within the Prime Minister’s portfolio.
Everymind Suicide Prevention Project Lead, Simon Pont said the appointment of Ms Morgan in this new role, highlights the progress being made across the sector.
